X-TEX GEOTEXTILE FIELD TRIAL- Pine Lake Project
Location: Pine Lake, Sammamish, Washington is an 88-acre stream feed
lake, 480 feet above sea level, surrounded by 160 homes and a park complete with a swimming area and a concrete fishing pier. Mean
depth is 20 feet.
Problem: Run-off and shoreline erosion going into the lake. The area of concern faces the East. Although the prevailing wind normally blows from the South West,
several times a year the wind shifts and blows through Snoqualmie pass from the East, creating heavy
wave action on the lake resulting in bank erosion. This along with pedestrian and canoe launching
traffic, is causing soil erosion that is carried into the lake by rainfall of about 40 inches per
year.
Solution: X-TEX blanket fabric was installed as a “terrestrial carpet”. Using 90-inch wide material
and securing it with 15-inch spikes located every three feet, the X-TEX was installed from the top of
the slope down to the lake where it covers the bank and goes into the lake bottom for an additional
ten feet. X-TEX is protecting both the bank and the high traffic area.
Conclusion: Runoff is controlled and bank erosion has stopped. Vegetation is appearing to grow up
through the X-TEX after only six months. The material remains intact and after heavy rainstorms and
traffic it is still performing without any damage to it. X-TEX is also filtering out any harmful
hydrocarbons that pass through it on the way to the lake. This
project is in it's third year and the X-TEX remains in
excellent condition. Neighbors have commented how well X-TEX blends into the environment and looks natural.
It only takes a little imagination and some X-TEX to solve a problem that was developing into an
environmental disaster.
